Toronto police unaware hospital patient was home invasion suspect, says chief
Toronto police Chief Myron Demkiw confirmed that investigators were unaware that a man treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound was a suspect in a violent home invasion. On Monday, Demkiw stated that the individual, later identified as Daijohn Richards, 23, was one of three suspects involved in a break-in that resulted in injuries to four family members.
“The home invasion happens in the middle of the night and a very short time later, an individual shows up at a hospital with a gunshot wound,” Demkiw remarked. He noted that during the initial investigation, there was no indication that an assailant had been shot. The incident occurred around 3:45 a.m. on 29 October at a residence on Hyde Park Circle, where three masked men allegedly forced their way in, confronting and assaulting the family inside.
Richards, who arrived at the hospital later that day with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder, is now wanted on multiple charges, including four counts of discharge of a firearm with intent to wound and robbery with a firearm. Police have yet to make any arrests related to the case.
In his comments, Demkiw detailed the standard procedure for police response to gunshot wounds and highlighted the ongoing nature of the investigation. He expressed confidence in the investigative team’s capabilities, stating, “Had I been a victim of this type of horrible set of circumstances, these are precisely the people I would want chasing and apprehending the offenders.”
The home invasion left the family in a precarious situation, with three members sustaining gunshot wounds and two others being struck with a hammer. David Morton, the father and CEO of the MAC Group, expressed concern over rising violence from home invasions, saying, “No family should ever have to experience this,” and asserted that families should be able to sleep peacefully without fear.
