Today’s news summary – Paper Talk 

Monday’s front pages report on various topics, with the doctors’ strike and the controversy at Lord’s taking the most prominent spots in the newspapers. 

Lord’s controversy: ‘Just not cricket’ 

The Sun describes the bust-up between MCC members and Australian cricket players as “extraordinary” after the stumping of the England batsman Jonny Bairstow. 

The Telegraph calls it an “underhand dismissal”. England lost the second Test despite a breath-taking century by captain Ben Stokes. 

“Hero and Villians!” says the Daily Mirror. The Daily Express and Metro both use the headline “just not cricket”. Whilst the Aussie newspaper, The Sydney Morning Herald says the Aussies did not cheat. But a columnist for the paper says the team did something almost as pivotal – they made Ben Stokes angry. 

Will doctors get a pay rise? 

The Times leads with an interview with health secretary Steve Barclay, who says he’s willing to give doctors a bigger pay rise. He told the paper that the upcoming doctors’ strikes need to be called off so negotiations can resume. 

The Daily Express and the Sun both report the doctors’ stikes could continue until 2025. Both papers have previewed a speech which will be made later by the chair of the British Medical Association.

The Guardian leads on a poll which has found three in four British people believe charges will creep in for the NHS over the next decade. 

Away from the most popular stories this morning, the Telegraph reports that banks have been told by the Treasury that they must protect free speech. Several high-profile controversial figures have had their accounts closed, something Jeremy Hunt is “deeply concerned” about. 
The Daily Mirror leads on the details of Labour’s plans to improve schools in England. The paper says the party will unveil their proposals this week as they plan to send “super teachers” squads into underperforming schools.
